Pick the job you are actually going for
Different {{discipline|roles}} are screened in completely different ways. An animator who neglects their {{reel|reel}} is finished before they start; a designer with a beautiful reel and no written work is finished at the second stage. Pick one — you can rerun this as a different role afterwards.
Spend the nine weeks
Six things you can build. Each can be skipped, done roughly, or done properly. Open “why this matters” before you decide — the reasoning is the part that gets marked, not the clicking.
Three studios, three outcomes
The applicant who built nothing
- Never appears in a search, so a {{spec|speculative approach}} is impossible
- Has no link to paste, so the application is a {{cv|CV}} with nothing behind it
- Cannot show whether the work is theirs or came from an {{assetpack|asset pack}}
- Arrives at interview with nothing to talk through
- Rejected by all three studios, usually without a reply
The applicant who built deliberately
- Is found by {{recruiter|recruiters}} searching the platform their discipline lives on
- Sends one link that answers every obvious question
- Shows {{breakdown|process}}, so the work is provably theirs
- Has a rehearsed way of talking about each piece
- Gets a reply, and can ask why when the answer is no
Every bit of jargon on this page
Print this. You will meet all of it again in job adverts, and using the words correctly in an interview is itself a mark of preparation.
